Located in Mirissa, 20 km south of Unawatuna, the sightings of Whales are 90% guaranteed & 80% for dolphins. They grow up to 100 feet long and upwards, whilst their tongue weighing as much as an elephant. Whales usually swim alone or in pairs.  They occasionally swim in small groups. Living up to 80 to 90 years, the continuous hunting of Whales have driven them to the brink of extinction. Although they came under the protection with powerful organizations making an effort to safeguard them.

In Mirissa, there are many varieties of Whales that you can check out. Whales such as Bryde’s Whales, Sperm Whales, Killer Whales and Fin Whales. Even different kinds of dolphins like  Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and striped dolphins can be seen swimming.

It is recommended to watch the Whales and dolphins during the months of December to January. One can see pods of Dolphins frequently accompanying the boats during these months.
